CLUB NEWS.

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2007.

Firstly, let me pay tribute to those stalwarts of the club who give selflessly of their time and efforts to keep the club running.

Pat Preedy, caterer, assistant treasurer, assistant secretary, and all round jolly good fellow. Mark Preedy who cajoles, bullies, glad hands, back pats and generally ensures that everybody else gets things done and, despite all that, does all the heavy work around the place, (the work that Clint doesn’t do) well who did you think put those large concrete blocks in place, not me that’s for sure.

Pat Drake, Bob Eldridge, Ron Kable, Dave Todd, who ensure that the weeds and are kept in check and the grass is kept short where it matters. I know I’ve missed someone, so I apologise for that.

There will be a number of innovations to the club’s calendar this year,

-           a number of maintenance days in which volunteers are called for to help with grass  and weed control at the waters edge.

-           A number of sale days in which members are invited to bring along anything they wish to sell or give away.

 -          A number of committee meetings at which club members are invited to sit in on.

A NEW CLASS

In recent months the club has acquired a good contingent of one-metre sailors who race at the lake every Sunday. Lately, Rob McKenna has taken the first steps in setting up a fast electric group. Rob advises that he calls the group “limited offshore” (LSO) class.

The class must be either deep vee or catamaran type hull. With minimum hull length of 700mm (26 inches) dead rise angle between 17 and 28 degrees and freeboard not be less than 25mm (1 inch). Boats shall be powered by a single motor of the “700” series or equivalent.  Full specifications can be obtained from Rob.

FATHER AGAIN.

Jason Hatcher is the proud father of a baby girl, Rachel. Born on the 1st February 2007. 9lb 10oz (4.36kgs) mother and baby doing well. Jason looks OK too.

CEC DOES IT AGAIN.

I have recently learned that Cec Keogh has come off his bike. Motoring along on his electric scooter after shopping, Cec altered course to avoid a curious child and collided with the side of a bridge and came off. He woke up in hospital with abrasions and no wallet. Retrieved the wallet and shopping from the local police station, cash intact. Some people are honest and some people are lucky.

EXCITEMENT ON THE LAKE

At a trial race of the new fast electrics Rob, Clint and Kev McKenna tried out their new LSO’s on a hastily arranged oval course. With Rob well in the lead, Kev took a short cut but Clint was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kev collided with Clint, leapt out of the water, and came to rest hanging stern down and half submerged with Clint bobbing around on the waves nearby. The rescue boat was launched and scooted out to assess the boats, no damage, but much guffawing and jocularity. Blokes bonding.!!

Most exciting thing on the lake since Pat Drake holed Dave Todd’s warship with a guided torpedo.

NEW MEMBERS.

New member are; -Rick Mayes and Kev McKenna. Welcome and happy and successful sailing. This brings the total number of members to 43.

THAT SAYING

Groggy

In 1740, British Admiral Vernon (whose nickname was "Old Grogram" for the cloak of grogram he wore) ordered that the sailors' daily ration of rum be diluted with water. The men called the mixture "grog". A sailor who drank too much grog was "groggy".

ITEM OF INTEREST

WD 40 was created in 1953 by three technicians from the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. It’s name comes from the project that was to find a Water Displace compound. They were successful with the 40th formulation, thus WD-40 was born. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their Atlas missile parts and the workers were so pleased with the product, they began taking it to use at home. Company executives decide that there might be a consumer market for it and put it in aerosol cans, and the rest, as theysay, is history.

It is a carefully guarded recipe known only to four people, one of them being the brew master.  There are about 11 million litres of the stuff manufactured each year. It gets its distinctive smell from a fragrance that it is added to the brew. Ken East, one of the founders, says there is nothing in WD-40 that will hurt you.
