President’s Report
Annual General Meeting - Sunday 15th October 2007

Sunshine Coast Model Boat Club, Inc.

President’s Annual Report  - October 2007

It is now four years since we have been at the University lakes enjoying arguably the best model boating venue in Queensland.

Our membership reached 50 this year but has fallen slightly since the majority of the one meter yachties have not renewed their membership.  The Committee was disappointed with their departure in view of the work undertaken to accommodate them on the lake, our attempt to provide a second lake, and the acquisition of a portable gazebo for their use.

Again, the Club has had an enjoyable active year, highlights of which were the two regattas.  The timing of the September regatta was unfortunate; we had plenty of water in the lake but also in the boats and the tents of the night sailors!

We had a good turn-up for our Sunshine Plaza boat show, and again the Plaza management received positive feedback regarding this event.

Life Line’s “Doing Dad’s Proud” Day in September was well attended and proved even more popular with the visitors than our show last year.

As a result of the work undertaken by the committee to obtain funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, two sturdy high quality gazebos arrived in July and were put to good use last month.

Our financial position has never been better thanks to Pat Preedy’s catering efforts and her success selling the raffle tickets.

Following our enquiries to the University regarding the fencing of the grounds, we received a letter from them stating that they are currently investigating extensive recycling of water from the lake for re-use through a chilled water tower which provides air conditioning for the University.  Because of this initiative they are unable to guarantee the Club access to the lake in 2008.  Our Secretary has written to the University requesting that they discuss this further with us.  He has also written to the Mayor, Councillor Joe Natoli, and to the State Member, Steve Dickson. We have had a reply from Mr. Dickson who has a close connection with the University and we are hopeful that he will try to persuade them to allow us to remain at this site for a longer period.

His son, Councillor Christian Dickson, has investigated alternative lakes and has recommended the lake at the junction of Claymore Street and Albany Street, Chancellor Park.  He has agreed to help us obtain Council permission for the use of this water. We have inspected the lake, which is a good size, but lacks car parking spaces, toilets and shade cover.  I feel that we must make every effort to remain at the University and the Committee plans to discuss this matter with Steve Dickson and the University in the following weeks.

The present Committee has been virtually unchanged for 4 years and all positions are now vacant since no written nominations have been received.  I hope that the members present will consider filling these positions.  We need a minimum of three to fulfil our Constitutional requirements.

Finally, I wish to thank my fellow committee members for their help and support over the last year, and Pat and Eric Preedy for putting in so much time and effort to keep us fed.

The Club subsidised a very successful Christmas meal at the Caloundra RSL last year, and we are planning a similar subsidised event in early December at a venue yet to be decided.
